Substrate Preparation

The surface shall be cleaned thoroughly of all loose particles, dust, curing compound, oil and grease, and other contaminants that will affect the bonding. All surface imperfections and protrusions shall be removed and repaired with a suitable concrete repair mortar.

Priming

a) BT 73/BT 74/BT 75: BT 28 (solvent-based primer) shall be applied to a clean, smooth, and dry surface by brush, roller, or spray. The primer shall be allowed to dry prior to the application of the membrane.
b) CPI 9/CP31: Dilute the coating with approximately 20% of water and apply it as a primer coat prior to the application of the top coat prepared by diluting the CR 66 coating with 10% water. Normal substrates shall be pre-wetted with water thoroughly.
c) CM 8/CM 117: Absorbent surfaces shall be primed with one coat of CT 17.

Mixing

The content of the pail shall be mixed thoroughly with a mixing paddle fitted to a slow-speed drill till a homogenous and uniform consistency is achieved.

Allignment

Installation of all membrane plies from the low point or drains, so the flow of water is over or parallel to the plies, but never against the laps. All overlaps at the membrane seams shall be installed so as to have "up" slope laps over "down" slope laps. Re-roll the roll halfway and stand on the unrolled portion to prevent shifting. Side overlaps should be a minimum of 100 mm and the end overlaps 150 mm.

Torching

Membranes are installed by using a cylinder-fed propane gas torch. Use of hand-held roofing torches is recommended, as it affords good control. Begin torching the embossed polyethylene side of the rolled portion of the membrane. Proper torching procedure involves passing the torch flame in an "L" pattern, applying about 75 percent of the heat across the coiled portion of the roll and 25 percent across the substrate, including the lap area of the previously installed membrane. As the membrane is heated, the embossing starts to melt away, exposing a shiny bitumen surface. Roll forward the membrane and press firmly with the boot or roller against the substrate to bond well. The propane flames should be moved from side to side and up the lap edge while the membrane is slowly unrolled and adhered to the underlying surface.

Brush Application

Apply the mortar with a notched trowel with suitable toothing to ensure additional care is taken to apply material into potholes and surface depressions.

Towel Application

Apply the mortar with a notched trowel with suitable toothing to ensure a contact area between mortar and tile of at least 65%.

Protection

The waterproofing membrane or coating shall be protected from external damage by a suitable protective layer.
